The Siamese cat is
a very distinctive and easily recognizable breed of cat.
There are many theories about the origins of the breed.
Originally these cats lived in temples and were guarded to
maintain breed purity. Only royals were permitted to own a
Siamese in the early days of the breed. Siamese are a very
special breed indeed. Before bringing a Siamese cat into the
home the potential owners need to be sure that the Siamese
is the right cat for them.
Physical Traits of the Siamese Cat
Two separate varieties of the Siamese cat
exist today. First, there is the traditional or apple-
headed type. This was the original shape of the Siamese cat.
Its head is apple shaped and has a compact body. This shape
fell out of fashion but is making a comeback with those that
keep Siamese cats as pets.
There is a more modern version of this
breed. It features a wedge -shaped head and a longer, more
lithe body. This version is more popular amongst breeders
and in cat shows. Four point colors are recognized: the seal
point, chocolate point, blue point and lilac point. Other
unrecognized point colors include: cinnamon, fawn, red,
cream, apricot, caramel, and tabby. The Siamese is of small
to medium build. This breed features almond -shaped blue
eyes and a short coat.
Personality of the Siamese
The Siamese cat is a very vocal breed.
They will vocalize to convey emotions and even when greeting
people at the door. Much of the time these vocalizations are
loud. The voice of a Siamese cat has been compared to the
cry of a human baby. The Siamese's personality is outgoing,
open, and well behaved. These cats get along well with
children and animals provided they are acclimated well. The
Siamese is loving, playful, and loyal as well as being
intelligent. They do not like to be ignored and love to be
the center of attention.
Health Problems in the Siamese Cat
The Siamese cat lives an average of
thirteen to fourteen years with some living to be as old as
20. The breed is not without health problems despite a
respectable lifespan. Health problems include Chronic Renal
Failure, Ameloydosis, Feline Megacolon, Pancreatitis,
premature tooth loss, and some breathing problems. Potential
owners should consider whether they can deal with such
problems before buying a Siamese.
